Cyber Counselling
This project is based on recognition of the momentous implications and impact that cyber activity is already having on traditional counselling. Cyber activity has momentous implications for traditional counseling. The purpose of the cyber counseling project is to develop and research this new, rapidly growing and innovative form of counseling. This project is expected to contribute to the literature and to practice by identifying and understanding competencies and other issues and challenges related to cyber counseling. The practicum component will situate graduates of this program to be among the few counselors considered qualified to provide cyber counseling.
There are several components to the cyber counselling initiative.
Funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General, Victims Secretariat, in collaboration with Kids Help Phone development of a pilot project, with the aim of teaching MSW students the necessary skills for online counselling. The MSW students were given the opportunity to practice their skills by responding to the postings on the Kids Help Phone “Ask a Counsellor” website.
Cyber Counselling Manual
A practicum for six 2nd year MSW students, to provide timely and accessible services to undergraduate students at St. Michael’s College and Victoria University 3 days per week from September to April. The services included traditional face-to-face counselling and cyber counselling. A key goal is to evaluate the cyber counseling and to identify competencies in online counseling, with the aim of dissemination.
This is a 3 year pilot project which began in the 2008-2009 academic year
Funded by Bell, A Cyber Counseling Continuing Education Certificate Program
First offered in September 2008.
Funded by Bell, A course on cyber counselling, offered as an elective for second year MSW students.
First offered in the 2009 January – April term
